Jury hits Chevron with $63M for toxic pit coverup

Chevron said it strongly disagrees with the Santa Barbara jury’s awarding of compensatory and punitive damages and will appeal.

A Santa Barbara jury delivered a $63 million verdict against Chevron Corp. for covering up a pit of toxic chemicals that caused the plaintiff to contract cancer. The lawsuit alleged that the company hid the presence of a chemical sump pit at a site where the plaintiff later built his home.
