Decision on clergy abuse bellwether cases due this week

Attorneys for plaintiffs and Catholic dioceses disagreed about whether having well-known accused offenders would make the cases a better sample.

A Los Angeles County judge is expected to decide by Friday which will be the first bellwether sexual abuse cases against the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Diocese of Orange to go to trial next year.

Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against the 12 Catholic dioceses in California since 2019 when the state passed Assembly Bill 218 and extended the statute of limitations for alleged victims of sexual abuse to sue up to age 40.
