Diversity initiatives unclear in aftermath of Supreme Court ruling

On Monday, a group of civil rights groups represented by the Lawyers for Civil Rights filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education against Harvard, arguing that preferential treatment of applicants whose parents or other relatives are wealthy alumni or donors is against federal law.

The aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court's dismantling of affirmative action in higher education has both sides of the battle uncertain of what's coming next, but the University of California -- because of its long experience dealing without it -- may provide a guide.
