Utilities agree to pay $22M to settle 2016 firefighting claims

“This settlement will compensate the public for the expense of fighting the Rey Fire and restoring these federal lands that are enjoyed by all Americans,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph T. McNally said in a news release.

Southern California Edison and other utility companies agreed to pay $22 million in damages to resolve claims that malfunctioning power lines contributed to a 2016 wildfire in Santa Barbara County.

Edison, Utility Tree Service LLC and Frontier Communications Holdings LLC agreed to the settlement announced Friday without admitting fault.
