‘Perfect storm’ led to $107M asbestos verdict

“The jury pool in Torrance is unfavorable to plaintiffs,” explained Benjamin H. Adams of Dean Omar Branham Shirley LLP. “There are so many aerospace companies there. There has never been a verdict for asbestos cases in Torrance.”

Despite a trial location unfavorable to plaintiffs, a Los Angeles County jury rendered the first asbestos verdict in the city of Torrance, finding that Union Carbide acted with malice in the related death of a janitor and awarding his family $107 million after a 10-week trial.
