Alameda County jury returns $18.8M talc verdict against J&J
The Alameda County trial was allowed to proceed, despite a stay on litigation against the company due to pending bankruptcy proceedings, after a New Jersey federal judge found that the precarious health of the plaintiff, Emory Valadez, justified letting him pursue individual claims.

An Alameda County jury returned an $18.8 million verdict Tuesday against Johnson & Johnson in an outlier talcum powder case filed by a dying man who claimed the company’s baby powder contained asbestos and caused him to contract a rare form of cancer.
Erik Haas, J&J’s worldwide vice president of litigation, said in a statement following the verdict that the company would appeal, citing the trial judge’s evidentiary rulings.
