AG warns cities they can’t zone their way out of housing laws

“Some local jurisdictions enacted ‘urgency zoning ordinances’ aiming to restrict or impose additional requirements on projects that were otherwise subject to ministerial approval under SB 9,” Attorney General Rob Bonta stated.

Bonta released new legal guidance on Monday warning cities of the requirements for establishing “emergency zoning ordinances.” In particular, he identified two recent laws he has cited in litigation with several Southern California cities.
