3 rules on attorney civility await Supreme Court’s OK

If approved by the state high court, the rules would require lawyers to annually affirm or reaffirm the oath when paying their dues. All licensees would have to submit a declaration affirming their commitment to the civility pledge by Feb. 1, 2024.

Attorneys would have to annually affirm a civility pledge under a court rule amendment the State Bar Board of Trustees unanimously approved, along with changes to two misconduct rules that clarify discipline for incivility.

Amendments to Rule of Court 9.7 and Rules of Professional Conduct 1.2 and 8.4 were passed on a 9-0 vote during a meeting on Thursday.
