Local prosecutors get expanded authority to enforce state Labor Code

“This is probably the most expansive local labor law enforcement in the country, as far as I know,” said Caitlin Vega, general counsel with the California Labor Federation, which sponsored the bill.

A law that Gov. Gavin Newsom signed this week will allow any public prosecutor in the state to prosecute violations of the Labor Code.

“The current system of labor law enforcement is inadequate to meet the needs of California’s immense workforce,” Assembly Judiciary Chair Brian Maienschein, the San Diego Democrat who wrote the law, said in a statement.
