UC Regents sue insurers to recover costs of cyberattack

“Defendants have also refused to follow the alternative dispute resolution procedure required by their own policy based on a meritless statute of limitations defense,” Covington & Burling LLP partner Rani Gupta wrote in the complaint.

The Regents of the University of California accuse their insurance company, Lloyd’s of London, of breach of contract for allegedly refusing to reimburse costs and damages following a cyberattack.

The lawsuit arises from a breach of UCLA Health in 2014-2015 that exposed the personal information of numerous patients. An initial status conference before Judge William F. Highberger is scheduled for Dec. 11.
