State sues Ralphs over job candidate criminality checks
The California Civil Rights Department said Ralphs is the target of the first lawsuit under a 2018 law, the Fair Chance Act, which prohibits employers from asking job applicants if they have committed crimes.
The state of California has sued Ralphs Grocery, saying it has ignored a 2018 law that bans businesses from asking prospective employees whether they have committed a crime until after a job offer is made.
And then, the Fair Chance Act requires, the employer can only rescind the job offer if the crime would make the candidates ineligible to perform the work and they must be given a chance to respond.
