Cummins Inc. agreed to pay $1.675 billion to settle allegations by U.S. and California and environmental protection authorities that it violated the Clean Air Act by illegally altering hundreds of thousands of pickup truck engines to bypass emissions tests.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said it was “the largest civil penalty we have ever secured under the Clean Air Act and the second largest environmental penalty ever secured.”
