Republican-led states challenge California's climate lawsuit against oil companies

The California attorney general's office argues that the oil companies knew for decades that reliance on fossil fuels would cause catastrophic results, but they suppressed that information from the public and policymakers.

Alabama and a host of other states have filed a bill of complaint with the U.S. Supreme Court seeking to block litigation filed in state court by California and four other states against oil companies for knowingly creating climate harms.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta's lawsuit is pending in San Francisco County Superior Court, while oil companies have argued that these disputes belong in Congress or federal courts.
