A federal judge in San Diego on Thursday found a plaintiff's counsel litigated an infringement case through trial in bad faith and tentatively ordered the losing lead lawyer and his client to jointly pay attorney fees and costs to the prevailing defendant company.

The attorney facing sanction said he represented his client in good faith, denied any "unreasonable or vexatious conduct," and called the tentative order a "heartbreaking" blow to his 30-year care...
