Judges, appellate justices, and trial attorneys kicked off juror appreciation week by praising citizens for strengthening democracy through their commitment to fairness and civic responsibility.

Orange County Superior Court officials on Monday launched Juror Appreciation Week by honoring the everyday Californians who serve as the backbone of the justice system--reminding them, and the public, that democracy depends not just on laws, but on the people willing to uphold them.

"You are the cornerstone of our democracy," said Presiding Judge Maria Hernandez in her remarks to prospective jurors gathered at the Santa Ana courthouse. "Our system fails without you....
