Awoniyi honored as Judge of the Year, reflects on milestone and identity
Presiding Judge Bunmi O. Awoniyi of Sacramento County Superior Court was named Judge of the Year by the county bar association Thursday, marking the culmination of a tenure that reshaped the bench and welcomed a new courthouse.





Sacramento County Superior Court Presiding Judge Bunmi O. Awoniyi said Thursday night that she was hesitant to speak about being the first black person to hold the job.
"In this climate, it could be perceived as being divisive, but I had to stop and pause and say, 'This is not just about you, this is about your journey,'" Awoniyi said while accepting the Judge of the Year Award from the Sacramento County Bar Association.
