Bill to extend pre-death pain and suffering damages advances in Senate

Backed by Consumer Watchdog, the bill counters industry claims that it has raised medical liability costs--claims supporters say are unsupported by insurance data.

A bill extending survivors' rights to sue for a loved one's pain and suffering before death cleared the California Senate Appropriations Committee on Friday, despite strong opposition from the medical industry. The vote followed a campaign by Consumer Watchdog to show the law hasn't increased medical negligence claims.
