A judge reluctantly agreed to hear a judicial settlement conference on the eve of trial in a $60 million real estate dispute following two years of attempted mediation.

San Francisco Superior Court Judge Ethan P. Schulman faced a flurry of pretrial motions from both sides during a conference Thursday, most aimed at excluding potential evidence trial, scheduled to begin on June 9. He found that the defendants' motions were "virtually all improper."
