Assembly passes bill to allow limited electronic court recordings

The Assembly passed AB 882, allowing limited electronic court recordings until 2028 to address a court reporter shortage, despite opposition from court and attorney groups. The vote was 62-4.

In response to a deepening shortage of court reporters, the state Assembly on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a bill that would temporarily allow electronic recording in California courtrooms--reviving a controversial workaround that has divided the legal community.

AB 882, authored by Assemblymember Diane Papan, D-San Mateo, passed on a 62-4 vote and now heads to the Senate. Most Republicans abstained, joined by two Democrats. It will now go to the Senate.
