Orange County public defender to retire after 28 years of service

Martin Schwarz embraced a more holistic criminal defense model--recognizing that a criminal offense is often only part of a larger set of challenges.

Martin F. Schwarz, Orange County's public defender since 2020 and a leading voice for what he described as a more holistic, client-centered indigent defense, will retire July 11 after 28 years with the department.

Schwarz, who joined the Orange County Public Defender's Office in 1997 and rose to executive leadership in 2012, said his decision was driven by the completion of key initiatives and confidence in the department's future leadership.
