A Los Angeles County judge has ruled that the California FAIR Plan Association's smoke damage policy is illegal.

Judge Stuart M. Rice's ruling validates, for now, claims that the state's insurer of last resort systematically underpaid or denied smoke-damage claims. Thousands such lawsuits have been filed since 2017. Attorneys are rushing to sign clients up for a new wave of cases stemming from the Eaton and Palisades fires in January.
