Jury awards $27.5M to nurse who raised patient safety concerns

The verdict followed Nancy Valla's claims that Dignity Health retaliated against her for pushing safety improvements including parking structure barriers and replacement of outdated anesthesia machines.

A Los Angeles jury awarded $27.5 million to St. Mary Medical Center's former chief nursing officer, finding that management retaliated against her and failed to accommodate her disability after she raised patient safety concerns.

"Some trials are fun; this one was like combat warfare," plaintiff Nancy Valla's attorney, David M. deRubertis, said Friday. Brennan Hershey and Johnny Rundell from Hershey Law were co-counsel.
