ACLU Southern California names new executive director

Chandra S. Bhatnagar, a veteran civil rights advocate and former senior staff attorney with the national ACLU, will lead the Southern California affiliate as it confronts what it calls the greatest threats to constitutional rights in a generation.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California has appointed Chandra S. Bhatnagar as its new executive director, only the third person to lead the affiliate in more than 50 years.

Bhatnagar brings two decades of advocacy and leadership experience across the nonprofit, government, and academic sectors. His appointment comes as the organization confronts what it calls unprecedented threats to constitutional rights.
