Judge halts project over threat to rare flower, shrimp, snakes

A federal judge paused a development project near Chico after ruling that U.S. officials failed to assess climate change risks to endangered vernal pool species like the Butte County Meadowfoam.

The Butte County Meadowfoam grows in only one place on Earth.

It's one of several endangered or threatened species -- including fairy shrimp and giant garter snakes -- that environmentalists warn could be wiped out if the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proceeds with a 314-acre residential and commercial project near Chico.

At risk are vernal pools, which fill with water in the spring rainy season and dry out in the summer. Only certain species can survive there.
