HCA settles lawsuit, agrees to erase nurses' training debts

HCA Healthcare will cancel nurse training debts, refund prior payments, and pay $2.9 million in penalties after a legal settlement with California, Nevada and Colorado over unlawful repayment agreements.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has settled with one of the nation's largest hospital operators, HCA Healthcare, in a proposed judgment that will erase nurses' debts racked up through mandatory company training programs.

The complaint and proposed judgement -- filed Thursday in Santa Clara County Superior Court in collaboration with the states of Nevada and Colorado -- claim HCA violated labor laws and consumer protection statutes by imposing illegal financial penalt...
