ExxonMobil will continue facing legal scrutiny over an alleged role in California's plastic pollution crisis after a federal judge allowed environmental groups' public nuisance lawsuit to proceed, while dismissing an unfair competition claim.

In an order filed Sept. 5, U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg granted in part and denied in part ExxonMobil's motion to dismiss a case brought by four California environmental nonprofits, including the Sierra Club.
