Tribes' cardroom suit dismissed as preempted by federal law

Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Lauri A. Damrell dismissed a case brought by Indian gaming tribes against California cardrooms, ruling that Senate Bill 549--the state law granting tribes standing--was preempted by the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. Attorneys for the tribes said they plan to appeal the decision.

SACRAMENTO--A Sacramento judge has finalized her order dismissing a long-simmering case brought by a coalition of Indian gaming tribes, setting the stage for an appeal.

Judge Lauri A. Damrell ended the Friday morning hearing by thanking the attorneys for "excellent lawyering on both sides." She also quickly acknowledged the case was far from over, even if her role in it was nearing an end.
