Environmental groups sue U.S. over whale deaths from California shipping lanes
Two national environmental organizations accuse federal agencies of ignoring a court order to assess how shipping routes off California kill endangered whales and sea turtles, violating the Endangered Species Act and other laws.
Two national environmental groups filed a federal lawsuit Thursday in Oakland, accusing the National Marine Fisheries Service and U.S. Coast Guard of defying a court order to assess how California's shipping lanes kill endangered whales and sea turtles via vessel strikes and pollution, in violation of the Endangered Species Act and other federal laws.
Plaintiffs are represented by Catherine Kilduff and David Derrick of the Center for Biological Diversity.
