With the arrival of Europeans in America came the establishment of their judicial systems. A legal hierarchy was formed that, in time, pinnacled with the United States Supreme Court, the definitive law of the land.

From the onset, and for hundreds of years, the appointed and elected judicial officers were made up almost exclusively of Caucasian men.
