Judge Orrick signals Meta Portal shutdown claims may proceed

A federal judge suggested claims against Meta over disabling its Portal devices may survive dismissal, questioning whether consumers were misled when software support ended and the products stopped functioning.

U.S. District Judge William H. Orrick indicated Wednesday he could let a lawsuit proceed against Meta over its decision to stop supporting the software that allowed a discontinued product to function.

At a motion to dismiss hearing, Orrick outlined a scenario where a customer spent over $200 on the product in question, a video-calling device named the Portal, only for the company to render it "worthless" when it shut down the software the device needed to operate.
