CALIFORNIA 50 Firms in Detail
California Lawyer's annual survey revealed important snapshots of firms operate in California.
Many major law firms have significant resources in Orange County: Of the 50 firms with the largest California presence, 30 have offices there, including 9 that employ 10 percent or more of their firm's attorneys. Hiring in those 30 offices generally kept pace this year with hiring by the firms nationally, but two grew significantly faster: Buchalter Nemer, and Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo.
Associates are the workhorses of big and midsize firms. Defined by drive and persistence, they fill the firms' most populous category of lawyers. Here's what California Lawyer learned about associate life. The California 50 had 5,484 associates in California as of June 30, an average of 110 per firm. About 1 in 5 were hired in the twelve months ended in June (about half as first-years). And about 6 percent work part time. (However, eleven firms either didn't answer the question about part-time work, said it didn't apply, or answered with a zero.) Below are partial rankings of the CA50 firms for women and minority associate staffing.
