Patent Payouts by the Numbers

Compensatory damages in patent-litigation awards soared from 2002 to 2013, helping the overall payouts balloon. But royalties rose even faster, shifting from 2 percent of payouts to 68 percent.

NOTE: Data covers only patent cases filed in U.S. District Court, 2000 to 2013, in which compensatory damages were paid (about 2 percent of all cases). Payouts in each case are counted only once, in the year the case ended.
