District Court IP Filings by the Numbers

How district courts stack up for various IP filings.

The Eastern District of Texas continues to see more patent lawsuits than any other federal court: 698 from January through April of this year, leaving the Northern District of California a distant third with 101 (Delaware ranked second with 172).

But other types of intellectual property filings cluster elsewhere. California's Northern and Central districts ranked among the top five courts nationwide for Lanham Act filings and cases alleging cybersquatting or false advertising from 2009 through the first quarter of 2015,* while Texas's Eastern District didn't crack the top 10. (Following each court's name below is its rank among the nation's 94 district courts for the number of average pending civil filings overall for 2011 to 2014.)
