Judge Marcus has mediated over 4,000 cases and arbitrated more than 100 matters, both involving employment (individual and class action), commercial/business, real property, legal malpractice, fee disputes, personal injury and medical malpractice. He has also served as a discovery referee. Judge Marcus is tireless and known for his preparation, legal knowledge, patience and creativity. Before becoming a full-time neutral, Judge Marcus was the Supervising Judge of the California State Bar Court. Prior to his 1995 judicial appointment, he was in private practice for over ten years, where he concentrated on complex business litigation and criminal defense. As a former Los Angeles County deputy district attorney, Judge Marcus tried over one hundred and fifty jury trials. He is a former State Bar Governor, a former Trustee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and was also an advisor to the State Bar's Labor and Employment Law Section's Executive Committee and a former Chair and member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association's Professional Responsibility and Ethics Committee. He is a frequent speaker and author on mediation strategy, mediation ethics, arbitration procedures, legal ethics and trial strategy for the Consumer Lawyers of Los Angeles, the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel, the CEB and numerous Los Angeles law firms. Judge Marcus has taught evidence at USC Law School and mediation ethics at Pepperdine School of Law's Straus Institute. Judge Marcus received his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and his J.D. from the UCLA School of Law.
