The Los Angeles County Superior Court launched a new website on Tuesday that is intended to be easier for the public to use, regardless of device.
Visitors to lacourt.org are redirected to lacourt.ca.gov. The new landing page is streamlined and easier to understand. It has clear explanations for the public and court users, particularly for self-represented litigants who may struggle with navigating the largest trial court system in the United States.
"The launch of the Court's new website represents a major milestone in the Court's mission to meet the needs of court users wherever they are," Presiding Judge Sergio C. Tapia II said in a press statement. "The new design puts the user first, whether accessing the site from a phone, tablet or desktop. It is now easier than ever to find important information and services."
The new website is nearly two years in the making. The court's 2023-2024 Biennial Report notes that many visitors access the court's website on their mobile devices. "On the back end of the website, work is underway to empower content owners and creators with the tools they need to publish new content," the report states. It gave no details about who these content owners and creators will be.
The court has implemented other technical improvements in recent years. It upgraded its technology to improve sound quality and remote appearances at the Spring Street Courthouse in Los Angeles in May.
In September 2024, the court launched a digital evidence system pilot project in certain small claims courtrooms to facilitate the upload, storage and management of millions of pages of documents submitted to the court each year. The court is also testing an electronic search warrant system that allows law enforcement agencies to upload search warrant applications without visiting the courthouse.
