Gerrymandering has become the lesser evil
California's gerrymandering isn't about principle -- it's a necessary defense against Republican election cheating and to protect democracy and end the practice for good.

Responding to the article by James R. Bozajian, "California falls into the gerrymander trap," Nov. 6 -- yes, gerrymandering is a bad thing. We need federal legislation that makes it illegal -- everywhere, at all levels of government.
Meanwhile, however, Bozajian is missing the big picture. California is not gerrymandering because we think it's the right thing to do. No, we're doing it out of necessity to counter Republican efforts to win elections by cheating. By doing so, we are acting to preserve our democracy.
Hopefully, with enough Democratic gerrymandering, we can gain
control of Congress and put an end to the practice for good.
