LOS ANGELES - In her criminal trial department, Superior Court Judge Laura F. Priver balances the roles of observer, decision-maker, and referee with precision on a case-by-case basis.

"I look at the jurors to make sure they're listening, pay attention to the evidence in case there's an objection, observe the lawyers, and keep an eye on what's happening in the back of the courtroom," she explained. "It's a lot of multitasking."
