RIVERSIDE - The first big decision of Superior Court Judge Jerry C. Yang's life was his name. Born in Taiwan to a Chinese family, he entered the world as Chen Wei Yang. But his parents offered him a choice once they relocated to Los Angeles -- an American name.

"I picked Jerry in pre-school," he said.
