LOS ANGELES - After more than a decade handling felony trials in Compton, Superior Court Judge Sean D. Coen now starts each day in a new department -- with the added bonus of seeing his father, Judge Ronald S. Coen, almost daily.

Both serve at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles. The elder Coen presides over major gang felony cases on the ninth floor, while his son oversees long-cause preliminary hearings six floors below.
