SAN FRANCISCO - William Alsup was returning from a two-night solo backpacking trip in the Sierras, and had a hankering for an iced tea. He stopped at a log cabin store in Mariposa County, and as he pulled out his wallet to pay, the cashier saw his federal credential, and asked if he was an agent. Alsup told her no, he is a federal judge, and she asked him if he is a conservative judge or a liberal judge.
