VENTURA - Rocky Baio was a young family law practitioner when child protective services tried to take a client's young son away after the boy arrived at school one day with a puffy eye.

The lawyers gathered in the judge's chambers to interview the child, expecting to hear a horror story.

"'What happens when your dad gets mad?'" one of the lawyers gently probed.
