SAN PEDRO - Judith A. Vander Lans was 41 and a single mom when she decided to go to law school.

Vander Lans had spent more than two decades as a secretary and paralegal at several Long Beach firms. It wasn't until she moved to Keesal, Young & Logan in 1981, however, that she considered becoming a lawyer.

Her boss was William H. Collier Jr., a neophyte litigator.
