COMPTON - Commissioner Michael J. Shultz spent a lot of time riding the waves off Topanga State Beach when he was in school, but he never got demerits for ditching class.
Surfing was part of the curriculum at Westside Alternative School, the small public school he attended from fourth through 12th grades. Shultz, the competitive type, thrived in that setting.
