LOS ANGELES - When people asked Mildred Escobedo why she was running for an open seat on the Los Angeles Superior Court's juvenile bench in Long Beach, she had one simple answer: There were only four Latina judges in the entire county.

Escobedo became the fifth upon her election in 2004.

A decade later, there are 16 Latina judges on the bench.
