SAN DIEGO - Early in her career, Justice Patricia D. Benke was criticized for being too quiet at oral argument. Any reticence, real or perceived, would have been understandable. When she took the bench on the 4th District Court of Appeal in 1987, Benke at age 37 was the youngest appellate appointee in state history.
