EL MONTE - In the quiet of his chambers, Gilbert Lopez demonstrates the ancient Native American call for healing and spirituality through song and the soothing beat of a handmade drum.

However, as a judge, Lopez must remain objective and somewhat detached, he said, from the emotions that fill his courtroom.

Off the bench, he connects with his spiritual side through the rhythmic tapping of the drum.
