SANTA ANA - When a big case didn't go to trial, Richard D. Fybel's life changed.

It was early 1999, and Fybel was a senior litigation partner with Morrison & Foerster LLP. He had cleared three months of his calendar to prepare for and put on a six-week trial in a complicated equipment-leasing dispute. When the case unexpectedly settled, he was left with nothing to do.
