VAN NUYS - Superior Court Judge Gregg Marcus likes to joke that he started at the top and worked his way down.

Marcus was fresh out of law school 40 years ago when he joined the district attorney's office as a senior law clerk. His first assignment: assisting Deputy District Attorneys Vincent Bugliosi, Stephen Kay and Burton Katz with the Charles Manson family murder trials.
