LOS ANGELES - The most useful experience Edward A. Ferns may have had in preparation for becoming a Superior Court judge, he said, was serving as the deputy district attorney adviser to the county grand jury. In that role, he instructed the jurors on the law, kept the prosecutor focused on the correct issues and occasionally dealt with concerns raised by defense counsel.
