COMPTON - Judge Teresa Magno became a lawyer to ensure her family never again experienced helplessness in the face of injustice as they had when she was a child in the Philippines.

She became a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney because she wanted to ensure justice for others, and spent almost half of her 15-year career as a gang prosecutor.
